Orbitally stable standing waves of a mixed dispersion nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation

We study the mixed dispersion fourth order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation \begin{equation*} %\tag{\protect{4NLS}}\label{4nls} i \partial_t \psi -\gamma \Delta^2 \psi +\beta \Delta \psi +|\psi|^{2\sigma} \psi =0\ \text{in}\ \R \times\R^N, \end{equation*} where $\gamma,\sigma>0$ and $\beta \in \R$. We focus on standing wave solutions, namely solutions of the form $\psi (x,t)=e^{i\alpha t}u(x)$, for some $\alpha \in \R$. This ansatz yields the fourth-order elliptic equation \begin{equation*} %\tag{\protect{*}}\label{4nlsstar} \gamma \Delta^2 u -\beta \Delta u +\alpha u =|u|^{2\sigma} u. \end{equation*} We consider two associated constrained minimization problems: one with a constraint on the $L^2$-norm and the other on the $L^{2\sigma +2}$-norm. Under suitable conditions, we establish existence of minimizers and we investigate their qualitative properties, namely their sign, symmetry and decay at infinity as well as their uniqueness, nondegeneracy and orbital stability.Comment: 37 pages. Plano centro cidadão: por um espaço urbano integrado

O Plano Centro Cidadão tem por objetivo o desenvolvimento de estudos urbanos para o “Centro Continental do Recife”, promovendo uma revisão das práticas urbano-arquitetônicas e das políticas para os espaços públicos, renovando os conceitos e valores urbanos da cidade que implementem a qualidade de vida cidadã, através de propostas de diretrizes urbanísticas para o território. Um dos principais desafios do Plano é o desenvolvimento de um processo de trabalho colaborativo. O objetivo do presente artigo é apresentar os conceitos norteadores do Plano, a metodologia empregada para o desenvolvimento dos trabalhos e o processo de colaboração social como etapa importante para a construção de um planejamento integrado.The objective of the plan entitled Centro Cidadão (A center for citizens) is to develop urban studies for a downtown area in the city of Recife known as its continental center. The process involves critical review of current urban design practices and politics regarding public spaces, leading to updated concepts and urban values that might improve the quality of life in the city, to be implemented through specific design guidelines. One of the Plan’s biggest challenges is to carry a collaborative work process. The goal of this paper is to present the guiding concepts of the Plan and its methodology, particularly its collaborative process, an important aspect towards achieving integrated urban planning

A Fundação do JEAB e o Isolamento Histórico da Análise do Comportamento

The occupation of academic and institutional places denotes an expansion of behavior analysis betweenthe 1940s and 1950s. However, the image of isolation of the Skinnerian science also started to become widespread among supporters and critics of the area during this phase. In this article, this ambiguous scenario was analyzed by examining aspects surrounding the history of the foundation of the first behavior analysis journal: Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB). The foundation of JEAB denotes an emblematic episode for understanding a perennial phenomenon in the history of behavior analysis: its continuous institutional and scientific expansion followed by its growing representation of isolation in the scientific communityA ocupação de lugares acadêmicos e institucionais denota a expansão da Análise do Comportamento, entre as décadas de 1940 e 1950. Todavia, é a partir desse momento que a imagem de isolamento da ciência skinneriana é difundida entre adeptos e críticos da área. Neste artigo, esse ambíguo cenário foi analisado por meio do exame histórico da fundação do primeiro periódico da Análise do Comportamento: o Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB). O argumento apresentado é de que a fundação do JEAB denota episódio emblemático de um fenômeno perene na história da Análise do Comportamento, a saber, sua ininterrupta expansão institucional e científca seguida de sua crescente representação de isolamento na comunidade científica

Percalços na História da Ciência:: B. F. Skinner e a Aceitação Inicial da Análise Experimental do Comportamento entre as Décadas de 1930 e 1940

The initial draft of the concept of operant conditioning and of the single-subject experimental design defines the bases of Skinner’s explanatory system. However, these formulations were not immediately welcomed. To enable a closer look on the history of formation of Behavior Analysis, three historical facts were highlighted: (a) the difficulties faced by Skinner at the end of his post-graduate studies; (b) the reaction to his first book, The Behavior of Organisms, and (c) the dispute with other explanatory behaviorial models. The conclusion of the present study is that the history of formation of Behavior Analysis is constituted by determinants of motivational, institutional, emotional and economic nature and by difficulties of going against the dominant methodological trends of North-American Experimental Psychology.A formulação inicial do conceito de condicionamento operante e do delineamento experimental de sujeito único define as bases do sistema explicativo skinneriano. Tais fatos ocorreram na primeira metade da década de 1930. No entanto, essas formulações não foram aceitas e recepcionadas imediatamente pela comunidade científica, da maneira como B.F. Skinner esperava. De forma a explicitar elementos que possibilitem um olhar mais atento a esse período da carreira de Skinner e da história da formação da análise do comportamento, orientamos nossas discussões para três conjuntos de questões, quais sejam: a) as dificuldades enfrentadas por Skinner após o término de seu pós-doutorado na Universidade de Harvard; b) a recepção de seu primeiro livro, The Behavior of Organisms, no contexto da Psicologia Experimental norte-americana; c) a disputa com outros modelos explicativos do comportamento. Com essas questões, procuramos uma interpretação dos primeiros percalços históricos para aceitação e estabelecimento do sistema explicativo skinneriano. Percalços que não podem ser vistos como mera curiosidade histórica, mas como constituintes do desenvolvimento da análise do comportamento

Waveguide solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with mixed dispersion

International audienceIn this note we provide some simple results for the 4NLS model i∂tψ + ∆ψ + |ψ| 2σ ψ − γ∆ 2 ψ = 0, where γ > 0. Our aim is to partially complete the discussion on waveguide solutions in [11, Section 4.1]. In particular, we show that in the model case with a Kerr nonlinearity (σ=1), the least energy waveguide solution ψ(t, x) = exp(iαt)u(x) with α > 0 is unique for small γ and qualitatively behaves like the waveguide solution of NLS. On the contrary, oscillations arise at infinity when γ is too large

Non-acquaintance and freedom in the path of a new behavioral science

Historical interpretations of the initial career of B. F. Skinner include theoretical and empirical innovations of his stub of a behavioral science. Despite this historiographical commitment, one aspect has been treated as secondary in the analysis of this phase of Skinner's career, namely, the impacts of institutional context of Harvard University. The purpose of this article is to explore this aspect through the analysis of the institutionalized practices of the departments of psychology and general physiology of that university, and its relations with the emergence of the scientific proposal of Skinner and its peculiarities. According to our interpretation, some singularities of this proposal are more broadly understood as institutional conditions that enabled Skinner to distance himself from the mainstream of American experimental psychology. Finally, we suggest that even though this study refers to an eminent scientist at a specific historical context, it offers the possibility to illustrate the role of social controls inherent to scientific practices in the course of scientific careers.Interpretações históricas do percurso científico inicial de Skinner destacam as inovações teóricas, empíricas e instrumentais de seu esboço de uma ciência do comportamento. Apesar desse empenho historiográfico, um aspecto tem sido tratado de modo secundário na análise dessa fase da carreira de Skinner, a saber, os impactos dos contextos institucionais da universidade de Harvard nos rumos de sua trajetória e ciência. O objetivo deste artigo é investigar esse aspecto por meio da apreciação das práticas institucionalizadas dos Departamentos de Psicologia e de Fisiologia Geral daquela universidade, e suas relações com a emergência da proposta científica de Skinner e suas peculiaridades teóricas e metodológicas. De acordo com nossa interpretação, singularidades dos primórdios da ciência skinneriana são compreendidas de modo mais amplo quando identificadas as condições institucionais que permitiram a Skinner se distanciar do mainstream da psicologia experimental estadunidense. Por fim, sugerimos que embora este estudo refira-se à história de um eminente cientista, em um momento e cenário histórico específicos, ele serve para ilustrar o papel de controles sociais, inerentes à prática científica, nos rumos da carreira de cientistas e suas produções intelectuais

Super-Resolution of License Plate Images Using Attention Modules and Sub-Pixel Convolution Layers

Recent years have seen significant developments in the field of License Plate Recognition (LPR) through the integration of deep learning techniques and the increasing availability of training data. Nevertheless, reconstructing license plates (LPs) from low-resolution (LR) surveillance footage remains challenging. To address this issue, we introduce a Single-Image Super-Resolution (SISR) approach that integrates attention and transformer modules to enhance the detection of structural and textural features in LR images. Our approach incorporates sub-pixel convolution layers (also known as PixelShuffle) and a loss function that uses an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) model for feature extraction. We trained the proposed architecture on synthetic images created by applying heavy Gaussian noise to high-resolution LP images from two public datasets, followed by bicubic downsampling. As a result, the generated images have a Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) of less than 0.10. Our results show that our approach for reconstructing these low-resolution synthesized images outperforms existing ones in both quantitative and qualitative measures. INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT IN FACILITIES MANAGEMENT AND ITS IMPACTS ON BRAZILIAN COMPANIES

The purpose of this paper is to characterize changes in facilities and its impacts on performance in some kind of organizations in Brazil. The research followed a literature review on innovation and quantitative analysis from a survey answered by 49 facilities managers in 2009. The study results showed that technical and organizational changes in facilities are focused on continuous improvements that impact directly the operational efficiency factors - productivity, quality and environment - and indirectly the financial resources - profit. Within a factor analysis it is possible to notice a conglomerates formation which can be named as changes in facilities which support business productivity, sustainability, quality and profitability. There is limited research material about changes characteristics and impacts in facilities mainly inside Brazilian companies which have significant representation in BRIC block (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Conglomerates indicate that improvements and innovations in facilities come from lower costs and increase assets and infrastructure lifecycle of organization support, powering managers for taking decisions. The technical and organizational changes identified were adopted mostly in an informal and tacit environment which allowed creation of new services and products in facilities, generating a continuous cycle to encourage improvements and innovations

Narrativas de resiliências: implicações da pandemia na prática docente de mulheres

Durante a pandemia do novo Coronavírus e as demandas educacionais derivadas, professores e professoras assumiram os desafios do ensino remoto e dos tensionamentos advindos das circunstâncias emergentes. Para algumas professoras, a realização das atividades profissionais acrescidas às responsabilidades maternas e domésticas trouxe implicações relacionadas à dinâmica de gênero no âmbito da docência. Focalizando este aporte, o texto busca examinar as condições de polivalência e sobrecarga de trabalho de cinco professoras pesquisadas. A estratégia metodológica articula dados obtidos de um questionário semiestruturado para embasar uma análise qualitativa da problemática. Constatou-se que o processo de subjetivação de gênero emergiu nos tempos e espaços docentes impactando de modo expressivo o desenvolvimento das aulas remotas, mas, ao mesmo tempo, evidenciando a capacidade de resiliência das professoras em suas reinvenções cotidianas
